We’re having a partyyyy… Oh wait- you’re having a party???

Did you know that Luther’s Farm Market hosts parties, cub scout / girl scout groups, preschool tours, and organizational get togethers?  A “few” years back, my Uncle Eddie had a vision of teaching children how farms work, where their food actually comes from, and really just opening their eyes to what a typical day in a farmer’s life is like.  Many of the first children to come visit our farm have since graduated high school and college – and we continue to provide this service, just as Uncle Eddie wanted.  Eventually we opened up our farm to host parties and events so, I just wanted to let all of you know that we are currently booking reservations for the 2011 season.  Typically, if you are having a school group come out during the day, you recieve access to the farm- hayride, pumpkin cannon, petting farm, a snack, craft, and take home souvenir.  We have restrooms and tents w/ tables and chairs provided.  Evening parties (say, if you want a Youth Group event during October) includes many of the same things- except Aunt Barb doesn’t read you a story while you sit on haybales waiting to find out what Farm Joe did with that big fat hen.  If interested in booking or if you would like more information, contact Barbara Luther at 330.659.4327 and she would be happy to help you!

Stay cool out there and as always, Support Your Local Farmer!

Products, Pricing, & Promotions

I have been hard at work trying to bring our market into the 21st century- updating our website, facebook, and essentially making your experience at Luther’s Farm Market more enjoyable.

Now, you can find all of the products sold at our market listed above under the “Products & Prices” tab.  Everything is listed by category w/ the price so you might have a better idea about what we have available before your visit.  I will do my best to update the list as we have new produce coming in.

ALSO, if you are a frequent shopper at our market and can’t live without sweet corn- I have started a punch card system.  If you purchase 10 dozen ears of corn, you will receive your next dozen free!  Make sure to ask for a card and get it marked by one of our helpful employees.

I know that many of you visit our market for our All Natural Beef that we offer.  This week we will be getting in a shipment to have on hand for you- keep your eyes open for delicious steaks, ground beef, and more!  Also, if you are interested, we offer our cows for sale by the 1/4, 1/2 or whole- a great opportunity to stock up your freezer for winter with beef that you know where it came from- LUTHER’S FARM!  Ask any of our employees the next time you are in and they will be able to get you more information.

Hope to see all of you soon and as always, Support Your Local Farmer!

Here we goooooo- Opening July 15th!

It is absolutely incredible how fast time seems to fly by- I feel like it was just fall and we were selling pumpkins and giving hayrides.  The snow came and went and lets not even think about what this spring was like…  All that rain!  A few of you may notice that we are opening later than usual this season- that record amount of rain we had this past spring, just like the Milli Vanilli song “Blame It On The Rain”.  Mother Nature threw us and most farmers for a loop and planting had a later start than usual.  Farmer Bob was really starting to wonder what to do with his time, until he filled it with rebuilding a burnt up John Deere tractor.  I think they were all chomping at the bit to get crops into the ground and when it finally did get dry enough- Bob, Tim, and Andy put in countless hours to get caught up.  I have to admit, there’s nothing like sitting on the porch and listening to a tractor working the fields when it’s pitch black out.

So, eventually things got planted and now we are preparing for our opening and for the traveling markets.  This year, our home market will open on Friday July 15th and when I know for sure I will post times, dates, and locations for our traveling markets.  I hope to implement some exciting new changes this year and  to look forward to seeing all of your smiling faces again.  I know that this season is going to be a tough one, but we appreciate all of your support!  See you on the 15th!!!

Grandpa Luther Had A Farm…

My daughter and I sang this on the way home from school on Friday, I think it was my way of pumping myself up for what I new was going to be an incredible weekend on farm…

So, seriously folks- it was a beautiful weekend!  Oh my goodness, we couldn’t have had more perfect weather for Fall Fest and it certainly made up for that cold stuff we had last week!  I was so glad that we had such a fantastic group of visitors both Saturday and Sunday- it seemed as though everyone had a great time and enjoyed all that we had to offer- which makes all of our hard work well worth it.  Pumpkins, cornstalks, straw, and all of our market goods seemed to fly out the door- definetly going to have to restock for the coming weekend!  The hot new thing this year seems to be our “Corn Pool”- kids love taking a “dive” in and also our “Make & Take Scarecrow”.  Everyone had a great time putting together their own scarecrow with their children and showing off their handy work- I loved that folks brought their guys and gals in to the market so that I was able to see them- definetly were proud craftsman!

I posted a ton of new photos in the photo gallery that were taken by family members so you can see what you’re missin’. We hope to get you out here this weekend so that you can make some memories of your own with your family!  Also, as a friendly reminder, this Sunday the 17th we have Old Fashioned Farm Days.  Bring out the kiddos to see how people lived in the “olden” days, should be fun for young and old alike!  Hope to see you all there bright and early…weather is supposed to be beautiful again!

Happy Carving to all of you that already bought your pumpkins! =)  ~Sarah Luther

Opening Weekend + Clambake = Tons of Work

Hi Everyone- it is Monday and I am thankful for it- never thought I would hear myself say that!  Opening weekend did a doozy on me, and probably everyone else that was involved too, so I decided to give myself a treat and stay home on this miserable day.  We worked hard the past two weeks trying to get ready for our first fall fest day of the year and for our very first clambake.  The weather was a bit on the gloomy side, but people showed up in droves and hung out all night enjoying the band, Cold Blue Steele.  After all of my incessant worrying, things turned out just fine, the food was tasty, company was great, bonfire roared and the hayrides…well, they were a little wet- but it’s fall, that’s to be expected.  I would like to thank Gale, Tim, Andy, Bob, Mike, Brenda, Gary, Jodie, Carrie, Jerry, Adam, Ashley and anyone else that helped out, including our wonderful volunteers- we couldn’t have done it without you!  We hope that everyone had a great time and that we can get some feedback about what was good, what was bad, and how we can improve for next year!   Comments are appreciated- they can only help us get better in our efforts to throw an enjoyable event for all of you.

On Sunday, it was bitter cold out, the wind was whipping through that darn market, sending chills up our bones.  It was also my first time EVER picking pumpkins.  Holy moly- what a job!  You just don’t know what kind of back breaking work is involved with farming until you actually do it…  (And all I picked were munchkins- maybe I am a wuss!)  Regardless of the cold weather, we did a good amount of business and quite a few people braved the elements to get their pumpkins.  We are glad you came out- definetly made our day go faster!

As a reminder, check out our tab with the upcoming events listed.  Currently we are selling tickets for our haunted hayride on October 30th and Old Fashioned Farm Days is coming up on the 17th.  Hope to see you all there, if not sooner =)

And the count down is on…

Every year this happens.  October creeps up magically and we are suddenly in the weeds.  All of our great ideas that we have been talking about, all those things that we have had to put off because there was corn to be picked, traveling markets to go to, fields and animals to be tended on…well they all have to be done…like NOW!  AHHHH!  (And that is more of a yell than a sigh people.)  We have exactly 9 days until the first day of October and there are so many preparations still to do!

I love my family- we had a meeting this past Sunday to discuss what has to be done and basically to delegate jobs leading up to Fall Fest.  If there is one rule it should be: NEVER, under any circumstance, leave a family meeting early when jobs are being handed out.  I left early because hey, I had a poker game to get to.  Turns out I probably should have stayed at the meeting because A) I lost at poker and B) I didn’t get to have any of Aunt Barb’s peach pie, which if you know my aunt’s baking, you know that this is a serious bummer. So today I had a somewhat mischievous Facebook post from Michael Mazaros about having some ”fun” jobs.  I am not sure what their idea of “fun” is yet- but 3 guys putting their heads together and coming up w/ ideas sounds like T-R-O-U-B-L-E.  I mean, I am no sissy- or as Farmer Bob likes to say “You’re either a wussy or a wusser”- just so you know- you don’t want to be a wussy.  I can hang w/ some tough jobs I suppose, but the tone that this post implied was not to my liking…  I must contact Farmer Tim ASAP!

I have to say that we excel under pressure and know just as in years past that everything will get done just in time.  Overall, I really feel like we have bonded as a team this summer and love my farm boys, I feel so honored that they allow me to be a part of their little club.  I have posted all of our October Events under the (shocking) “Upcoming Events” tab.  I am sure that I did not need to tell you this and you probably could have figured it out on your own.  Give me a break, I am worried about this list of “fun jobs”.  Thanks Mike.

Make sure to hug your local farmer – he/she puts food in your belly and on your table everyday!  The least you could do is give them a little TLC =)

Hold your horses- where did summer go?!?

What a year it has been already!  It seems that somewhere along the way, summer disappeared yet again, which makes me sad and truthfully a little excited too.  My favorite season is summer (mostly because I am a freeze baby and my birthday is in July).  BUT, this is the time when we open the market and I get to see all of our faithful and loyal customers (and love meeting the new ones too).  Summer is when we get to gettin’- our corn starts popping up, there are veggies growing in the fields, and my father, Bob Luther, disappears for hours on his trusty old tractor.  Tim, my brother and cousin Andy work countless hours bailing hay, taking care to make sure the animals and the farm is tended to, and that the market (traveling markets as well) run safe and smooth.  There is no doubt it is a busy and fruitful season.  Our wonderful employees and especially the farmers work tireless hours and it is your support that makes us feel appreciated in the community.

Which brings me to why I am so excited.  September is always a crazy busy time for everyone- school starts back up, sports begin, and the community at large prepares for fall and that terrible season that follows, winter.  Leaves drop off the once green trees and colder temperatures approach. This is FALL people!  It is here!  The month of September is our preparation time for Fall Fest, which happens every weekend in October.  This annual event brings out hundreds of people- whether it is to pick the perfect pumpkin, go for a nice afternoon hay ride with the family, or to see the pumpkins fly!  (And if you don’t know what I am talking about, you gotta check it out- an awesome pumpkin cannon which Farmer Bob constructed himself!)  In past years, we have edited our festivities, changed things around, added and subtracted attractions.  This year is no different and I have to say, the events that are on the agenda seem pretty fabulous!  Our hard-working Aunt Gale (wife of the late Eddie Luther) has been wracking her brain for some hot new ideas, man let me tell you- this is going to be one year you don’t want to skip out on visiting us!  As we get details finalized, I will post them with the event, date, and time so that you can plan accordingly.  As always, it is essential that you stop out to get all of your fall needs, which include pumpkins, gourds, mini hay bales (or large if you prefer), cornstalks, and indian corn.  We will have the usual: hay rides, corn maze, petting farm, pumpkin cannon, and of course some delicious food.  This is what makes my October so special.  The fact that we get to see all of you enjoy yourself on the land that we have called home for the past 110 years.  It truely makes all the hard work and long hours worth it.  Family farms are becoming scarce and it is awesome that we have been able to thrive for this long…we couldn’t have done it without YOU!  Thank you for all of your support throughout the years and I can’t wait to see you again this October!

Happy Farming =)  ~Sarah Luther
